Question:

Write a short paper about yourself in a professional context (500 words max), for example as an intending student in the Professional Development Program. What are the things that are important to you in this context? What to you bring to the table? Include a statement about the kind of education system would be your ideal. (Here it might be useful to think about what you’ve learned about the Finnish school system.)
TA’s explanation:
you will discuss about yourself in a professional context (500 words max). What are the things that are important to you in this context? What to you bring to the table? Include a statement about the kind of education system would be your ideal (you can draw on the strength of the Finland school system and the educational system[s] you have experienced).”

Unless you have some unusual kind of independent wealth, you will have been in some number of professional positions, at the very least the position of preparation or seeking. Right now everyone shares the position of student. As my colleague Jade puts it, there may be other layers to your roles as well (athlete, research assistant, TA, volunteer, … ). From the first week’s portfolio assignments, I know that many of you also look ahead to how your time as a student relates with your professional plans. There are many differences among the professional cultures in which you might later have a place. I hope you have given thought to this before this assignment.

Consider the materials we’ve seen so far in this course, and the range of positions and professional relationships that they, and your own experience, have shown you. Establish how you position yourself for this essay (for example, as a student, as a future teacher, as a future parent…). Once you have established that professional position, write about what matters to you in that context and what you have to offer there. Connect this with a statement of what kind of education system would be your ideal (and why). I will look for a graceful connection between these parts of the assignment.

JUST YOU KNOW I am pursuing a bachelor of science in engineering and majoring in electronic engineering.

introduction
Isn’t it interesting how we tend to look elsewhere for the solutions to our problems? It is fascinating to observe the amount of attention in the media to the Finnish educational system, when it seems that we already know what we want to do with ours (in multiple dimensions). But it’s a good thing that we do look outside ourselves to inform what we do to build upon our own institutions. There is a lot to learn by doing so. Finnish students score high in achievement tests, yet allegedly spend the least amount of time in school. What is the nature of their school experience? How do the teachers think about curriculum? How is this different from the North American experience, and why is that important?
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
This section further explores the concepts of curriculum and curriculum studies in Education by:
• Introducing contemporary comparative analyses of curriculum in public education systems.
• Developing an understanding of global issues, challenges, and directions in public education.
• Looking at international experience for comparative analyses as to how the public education system might be improved locally.
• Continuing the study of and participation in curriculum deliberation.

Portfolio
Write a short paper about yourself in a professional context (500 words max), for example as an intending student in the Professional Development Program. What are the things that are important to you in this context? What to you bring to the table? Include a statement about the kind of education system would be your ideal. (Here it might be useful to think about what you’ve learned about the Finnish school system.) Submit this via Canvas Assignments (on the left-hand navigation bar).
Commentary
Once you begin to search additional sites and links on the Internet, you’ll find that a great deal of discussion and commentary about the educational system and the schools of Finland. In some of this commentary, you’ll also discover that schools of British Columbia and Alberta fair pretty well in the popular media about education. Feel free to share links in the Group Discussion section of the course.
Remember that the way we assess our schools and educational systems is related to what we take, sometimes implicitly or even unwittingly, as the goals and purposes of education. If we stand back and broaden the way we think about the latter, we may change the way we think about and practice the former.
As you continue your educational journey, you’ll find yourself changing in the way you regard yourself. Some refer to this as your identity and agency. In part, this has to do withlearning about your learning. In this course, we assume that the writing process will help you to clarify the way you think about yourself and, in particular, the way you represent yourself through literacy practices common to the world of education. We hope you take pride in your growing portfolio and that you are able to see it now as a vehicle for extending and deepening your learning.
