Health promotion conferences
Having a good health is very crucial to individuals for it leads to social, economic, and personal development. Besides, good health is an important aspect that defines the quality of life. According to Gorin & Arnold (2006), factors such as politics, economy, culture, and environment, and behaviour have great impact to the health of the people. It is due to these factors that health promotion initiatives are launched to make the conditions positive through advocating for health. Health promotions are not limited to health care and are intended to place health as priority for policy makers in all sectors.
In Ottawa in1986, the first conference on health promotion was held. The objective of the conference was to achieve “Health for All”. The health promotion conference in Ottawa emphasized on the implementation of public health policy and creation of environments that are supportive (World Health Organization, n.d). Globally, people have concurred that health is very important for it improves societal performance and development. The fifth conference on health promotion was held in Mexico City in 2000. This conference, just like the first conference focused on the importance of health promotion in addressing the social determinants of health.
It is therefore very clear that the health promotion conferences are very important for they have helped to improve the lives of populations that are socially and economically deprived. The health promotion conferences help the global community in setting priorities, decision making, planning strategies, and their implementation to realize better health (Gorin & Arnold, 2006). In other words, the health promotion conferences empower the communities giving them control of their destinies. They also provide information and education on health and enhance life skills.
These health promotion conferences, to some extent they have achieved their goals. Many countries have taken seriously the issue of people’s health. Governments have initiated public health policy of health promotion that entails a healthy lifestyle and supportive environment (Green & Tones, 2010).
Though the conferences on health promotion have not achieved their goals, they have been very important to the global community. The conferences have enlightened people on the importance of good health for it brings about social, economic and personal development.
