Article Summary

The article “Hacking and Cybercrime” looks into the components of the fast growing Cyber world. The article begins by an analysis of a hacker. It describes the hacker as an individual with computing skills and who is considered as a computer professional. The article furthers the idea that hackers have helped build the internet and it suggests that any person who has contributed in any way to the computer culture can consider themselves as hackers (Nataliya, 2011). The article moreover gives the distinction between a hacker and a cracker. It describes the former as a person who considers themselves very talented programmers and who command great respect amongst their peers; they are also involved in other numerous computer projects. The latter is specialised in breaking whatever the hacker creates. Hacker engage in the activity because they are aware they can do it, for the love of the challenge presented in hacking, the publicity they get from it, for vengeful reasons and the financial benefits they accrue.

The article states that Cyberethics is responsible cyber behaviour. The article proposes that every person should be taught or educated on rules they need to follow once they are online so that people can avoid being victims of their own ignorance.
Cybercrimes, Offences and Categories

The article states that computer crimes have been categorised into different groups. Firstly this happens when a person uses a computer as a target. Secondly, if a user attacks other people’s computers by sending them viruses. Thirdly is when a user uses a computer to commit traditional crimes like credit card fraud and lastly if a user uses the computer as an accessory to store illegal or stolen data.
Children and Adults versus Cyberworld

Kids should be taught how to be good cybercitizens and they should join the Super cyber. They should be educated on how to use the internet in a responsible and safe way. Parents should set up adult models and they should take seriously the idea of belonging to the computer culture.
Protection from Cyberworld

The article states that most companies choose to take a reactive approach when dealing with information security. These companies access their systems’ vulnerability after an attack which is expensive and very ineffective. It proposes that a proactive approach –also termed as ‘ethical hacking’- should be embraced instead.
Law Involvement

The article asserts that apart from companies’ security systems, awareness training, policies and general education of the public, the law should also try to protect the consumer. The ‘real world’ laws also do apply to cybercrime. Several laws applicable include: The USA Patriotic Act, US Copyright Law, the Computer Fraud Act of 1986, computer security Act of 1987, The Federal Privacy of 1974, Georgia Computer System Protection and Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Most companies are the e-format data storage method. Therefore it is important for them to know how to protect themselves. Furthermore, cybercrime affects every person therefore it is important to know how to protect the Cyber world.

Information regarding cybercrimes should be made public to educate the public of its hazards. People should be taught on ethical education and programs to create cyber awareness should be established.
